What is pargeverine?

Pargeverine is a chemical compound classified as an active ingredient , which belongs to the line of drugs with antispasmodic and spasmolytic properties, with a direct effect on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal system. (1)

What is pargeverine used for?

  • Pargeverine acts by relaxing the hollow smooth muscle fibers , also prevents visceral spasm and reverses hypoxia caused by spasm.   
  • It is used to treat: 
    • Painful spasms and hepatic colic .
    • Pharyngoesophageal dyskinesias, dysphagia, functional gastritis .
    • Pyloric spasms and duodenitis. 
    • Ulcer disease, associated with basic treatments.
    • Cholecystopathies and cholecystitis.
    • Sphincter of Oddi spasms and biliary dyskinesias.
    • Acute colitis , spasmodic colitis, sigmoiditis.
    • Constipation syndrome due to colonic hypermyotonus, renal and ureteral colic .
    • Ureteral and bladder spasms and cystitis.
    • Premenstrual tension, functional tubal spasm, and painful adnexitis.
    • As an aid in the treatment of dysmenorrhea .

Dosage and routes of administration of pargeverine

Pargeverine Side Effects

Data from clinical studies have indicated that the therapeutic action of pargeverine has caused in groups of patients some of the following adverse effects: 

  • Allergy manifestations due to patient contact with any component of the formula.
  • Urinary retention and constipation.
  • Blurred vision and dizziness. 
  • Tachycardia.
  • Headache , insomnia and drowsiness.
  • Dry mouth and throat.
  • In the case of injection, redness may appear in the area of ​​application.

Important: Generally, at therapeutic doses, pargeverine does not have side effects, but if any of them occur, please stop using it and consult your doctor .

Pargeverine Contraindications and Warnings

The use of pargeverine is contraindicated in the following cases: 

  • Patient hypersensitivity to any component of the formula.
  • Patients with glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy and heart failure.
  • During the pregnancy period.
  • During breastfeeding .
  • In children under 12 years of age.
