Gabirol® is part of a line of drugs with antiviral properties , its use being relevant to treat respiratory infections such as influenza, which happen to be quite common in the population.

In this sense, we will study in this article what gabirol® is , in addition to its functions in the body and the opposite effects that it can bring with it over a certain period of time.

What is gabirol?

Gabirol® is a commercial product that is sold with a prescription, created by the Chinoin laboratory (1) , with the active ingredient rimantadine hydrochloride , whose mechanism of action is antiviral, that is, it fights the influenza virus and prevents the flu in the body.

Its use is by oral administration, since it comes in presentations of 14 capsules and oral solution with 100 mg and 100 ml of the active metabolite . Its most frequent doses consist of one tablet, 1 to 2 times a day for 24 hours.

What is gabirol used for?

Gabirol® is prescribed for type A influenza or influenza A virus , being the most common type of flu (and the cause of flu such as H1N1), and its transmission is mainly through birds , causing high fever , muscle aches and severe respiratory problems.

To highlight: The mechanism of action of gabirol® is to prevent the virus from remaining in the body and spreading, also inhibiting the activation of the M2 protein, a complex ion channel that can facilitate the replication of the virus in the body . 

It should be noted that gabirol® is easily digested in the gastrointestinal tract, therefore it is recommended to administer it well with meals .

Gabirol Side Effects

Gabirol® can bring with it a series of mostly unwanted side effects, although fortunately many of them are infrequent , therefore it is recommended to be aware of the following reactions:

Important : A medical study highlights that: ” Adverse effects are usually moderate, which may decrease or disappear after the first week of treatment and cease as quickly as the drug is discontinued . ” (3)

Gabirol contraindications

Gabirol® is also contraindicated in a certain number of patients, so it is important to emphasize once again that this medication always relies on a medical prescription to guarantee its use. For the same reason, it is not recommended in:

  • People with hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.
  • Pregnant or lactating women.
  • People with kidney failure.
  • People with liver failure.
