What is ectaprim?

Ectaprim is the brand name of a synthetic combination medicine, which uses as active ingredientstrimethoprim®and sulfamethoxazole(1), two chemical compounds belonging to the line of broad-spectrum antibiotic medicines, withan effect on bacteria that cause infections in the body.

What is ectaprim for?

  • Thanks to the mechanism of joint action of its active ingredients, ectaprim®has a bactericidal effect that derives from blocking enzymes thatcatalyze successive reactions in the biosynthesis of folinic acid in the microorganism, eliminating all those bacteria susceptible to the chemical components of the drug, mitigating the damage of infections caused by these(3)

    • Upper and lowerrespiratorytract infections.
    • Infections of thedigestive system.
    • Skinand soft tissue infections.
    • Infections of theeyes, ears, nose, pharynxand sinuses.
    • Genitourinary infections.

Dosage and routes of administration of ectaprim

Ectaprim comes as a tabletcontaining trimethoprim 80 mg and sulfamethoxazole 400 mg, it is also sold in suspensionina bottle containing 120 ml containing trimethoprim®800 mg and sulfamethoxazole 4000 mg. The administrationis oralin both cases and the dosage for information, may be as follows:

  • Tablets: The amount of 2 tablets of 80 mg of trimethoprim and 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole, each or 2 times a day.
  • Suspension: Infants 3 to 4 months old, 2.5 ml. Children from 6 months to 5 years of age, 5 ml. Children from 6 to 11 years of age 10 ml and children over 12 years of age and adults 20 ml every 12 hours.

Side effects of ectaprim

Therapeutic treatment with ectaprim®may cause some of the following side effects in a certain patient population:

  • Possible allergic reactions due to the patient’s contact with any component of the formula.
  • Nausea, vomiting, rashes.
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia.
  • Leukopenia andLyell syndrome.
  • Megaloblastic anemia.
  • May alter phenylalanine metabolism.

Important: If during treatment with ectaprim® the patient presents any of these symptoms or another not included in the list, please stop its use and notify your doctor .

Contraindications and warnings of ectaprim

The use of ectaprim® is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity of the patient to any of the components of the drug.
  • Patients with severe conditions of the hepatic parenchyma, blood dyscrasias.
  • During the pregnancy period.
  • During breastfeeding .
  • In children under 12 years of age.

You should know: Provide all the information about your medical history to your doctor, before starting treatment with ectaprim®.

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula or to sulfonamides.
  • Kidney function risk.
  • Medication with drugs intended for other pathologies.

Warnings:

  • Pharmaceutical products such as ectaprim® must be administered with a prescription or prescription.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions during treatment with this drug.
  • Do not exceed the dose recommended by your doctor.
