What is trixone?

Trixone is the trademark of a chemical compoundclassified as an active ingredient, belonging to the line of drugs with a third-generation and broad-spectrum antibiotic effect calledceftriaxone®, a substance currently manufactured semi-syntheticallywith bactericidal action(1)

What is trixone for?

  • Trixone®, thanks to its mechanism of action, eliminates bacteria through the inhibition of the synthesis of the bacterial wall, eradicating these pathogenic microorganisms andalleviating the symptoms of infections.
  • It is used to treat:
    • Infections in patients with depressed immune systems.
    • Sepsis.
    • Respiratoryinfections, especially pneumonia, as well asthroatand ear infections.
    • Meningitis (infection and inflammation of the membrane lining the nervous system). (3)
    • Abdominalinfections including peritonitis, gallbladder and gastrointestinal tract infections.
    • Infections of the genital tract.
    • Lyme disease.
    • Joint infections,skin infections, as well as infected wounds.
    • Urinary tract infections including kidneys, bladder and urethra.

Dosage and routes of administration of trixone

The presentation of trixone®, is inbox with vials of ampoules with powder of 0.5 g or 1 gand glass or plastic ampoule with 2 or 3.5 ml of diluent respectively for injection. The administration of this medicineis intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) and the dosage for informational purposes may be as follows:

  • Infants up to 2 weeks of age:One dose of 20 mg/kg up to a maximum of 50 mg/kg of body weight per day. The duration of treatment will depend on the pathology to be treated.
  • Infants and children 3 weeks to 12 months old: 20 to 80 mg/kg per day.
  • Children with a body weight of 50 kg or more: 1-2 g of ceftriaxone every 24 hours.
  • Adults and children over 12 years of age: 1-2 g of trixona® once a day.

Trixone Side Effects

Clinical data indicate that pharmacological treatment with trixona® may cause some of the following adverse effects in a certain patient population:

  • Possible presence of allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
  • May cause bacterial resistance.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea , nausea, vomiting , stomatitis and glossitis.
  • Leukopenia, granulocytopenia, hemolytic anemia or thrombocytopenia.
  • Allergic dermatitis , pruritus, urticaria, edema or erythema multiforme.
  • Headaches and dizziness.
  • Mycosis of the genital tract and chills.
  • Possible vaginal infection .
  • Cough and fever .

Important: If during the administration of trixona® (IM or IV) any of these symptoms or another not included in the list appear, please stop its use and consult your doctor .

Contraindications and warnings of trixone

The use of trixona® is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula or to cephalosporins.
  • Preterm newborn infants with bilirubin encephalopathy.
  • During the breastfeeding period.

You should know: Provide all the information about your health history to your doctor, before starting treatment with this drug.

Avoid it if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, any cephalosporin, or Penicillin .

Warnings:

  • Pharmaceutical products such as trixona® must be administered with a prescription.
  • Do not administer trixona® if the solution is not clear, if it contains suspended particles or sediment.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages during treatment with this drug.
  • Inform your doctor if you are being medicated with other drugs for other pathologies, before starting treatment with trixona®.
  • There must be a medical recommendation before starting treatment with trixona®, in pregnant women.
  • Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
