What is tolterodine?

Tolterodine is a synthetic drug classified as an active ingredient , which belongs to the line of antimuscarinic and antispasmodic drugs with an effect on the smooth muscles of the urinary tract , to treat some diseases. (1)

What is tolterodine used for?

  • Thanks to its mechanism of action, tolterodine blocks muscarinic receptors to relax the bladder muscle (among others), preventing contraction and annoying symptoms.
  • It is used to treat:
    • Patients with bladder overactivity with symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency, and/or urge incontinence. (two)

Dosage and routes of administration of tolterodine

Tolterodine is usually supplied as extended-release capsules, containing 2 mg or 4 mg of tolterodine L-tartrate. The administration is orally and the informative dosage can be as follows:

  • Tablets: Adults and older adults, the recommended daily dose is 4 mg. The dose with the 2 mg tablets is twice a day.

Detrusitol®

  • Detrusitol® is an antimuscarinic agent that uses tolterodine as its active ingredient, in concentrations of 2 mg and 4 mg.
  • It is used to treat bedwetting and overactive bladder .

Urotrol®

  • Urotrol®  is a synthetic drug that uses tolterodine as its active ingredient.
  • It is indicated in the treatment of symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome .

Urostop®

  • Urostop® is a synthetically manufactured drug that uses tolterodine as the active substance.
  • It is used as an antispasmodic to treat symptoms associated with overactive bladder .

Terotol®

  • Terotol® is a medicine in prolonged release capsules, which contains tolterodine in concentrations of 2 and 4 mg.
  • It is used to treat overactive bladder in adults .

Tolterodine Side Effects

Clinical data indicate that treatment with tolterodine may cause some of the following adverse effects in a certain patient population:

  • Allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
  • Nervous system disorders such as dizziness, confusion, headache and drowsiness.
  • Abnormal vision and dry eyes.
  • Abdominal pain, constipation , dyspepsia, flatulence, gastroesophageal reflux, diarrhea .
  • May decrease the effectiveness of other medications such as rivastigmine.
  • Ear and labyrinth disorders such as vertigo.
  • Bronchitis , chest pain and fatigue.
  • Hallucinations , memory impairment .

Important: Stop treatment with tolterodine and notify your doctor, if you notice the appearance of any of these symptoms or any other that is not on the list.

Contraindications and warnings of tolterodine

The use of tolterodine is contraindicated in the following circumstances:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the formula’s components.
  • Patients with angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Patients with Parkinson’s disease and dementia problems.
  • In case of patients suffering from myasthenia gravis.
  • People with long QT syndrome.
  • During the period of pregnancy or breastfeeding .

You should know: Before starting treatment with this medicine, provide your doctor or pharmacist with all the information about your health history .

Avoid it if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to the components of the formula.
  • Medication with other drugs for other pathologies.
  • Urinary retention .

Warnings:

  • This medication is for delicate use, so it must be administered under strict medical supervision.
