What is bentyl used for?
- Thanks to the anticholinergic action of its active principle, bentyl® acts through a direct musculotropic spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, managing to reduce muscle tone and motility .
- It is used to treat:
- Functional conditions and their associated symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract in which there is smooth muscle spasm, such as irritable bowel syndrome and spastic constipation. (3)
- Gastrointestinal disorders such as occurs in colitis , diverticulitis, regional enteritis, gastritis , and peptic ulcer .
Dosage and routes of administration of bentyl
The presentation of bentyl® is in a box with 30 capsules, which contain dicycloverine hydrochloride 10 mg. The administration of this drug is orally and the posology as a reference can be the following:
- Adults: A dose of 10 to 40 mg is recommended, 3 to 4 times a day.
Bentyl Side Effects
It has been observed in clinical studies that treatment with bentyl® can cause some of the following adverse reactions in a certain group of patients :
- Manifestation of possible allergic reactions due to patient contact with any chemical component of the formula.
- Dry mouth, thirst and dizziness.
- Blurred vision and rashes.
- Anorexia, nausea and vomiting .
- Headaches , psychotic episodes, sedation and dysuria.
Important: If during treatment with this drug the patient observes any of these manifestations or another not described, please discontinue its use and consult your doctor .
Contraindications and warnings of bentyl
The use of bentyl® is contraindicated in any of the following cases:
- Patient hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
- Patients with known idiosyncrasies to dicycloverine hydrochloride.
- Children under 12 years.
- During the period of pregnancy without medical authorization.
- During the breastfeeding period .
You should know: Do not start treatment with this drug without first providing your doctor with all the information regarding your health history .
Avoid if you have:
- History of hypersensitivity to dicycloverine.
- History of idiosyncrasy to medications.
- Obstructive uropathy and obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Paralytic ileus, intestinal atony, severe ulcerative colitis and myasthenia gravis.
Warnings:
- Pharmaceutical products such as bentyl®, must be administered with prescription or medical prescription.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions while using this drug.
- Do not exceed recommended dose.
- Notify your doctor if you are being treated with medicines such as amantadine , class one antiarrhythmic drugs or agents, antihistamines, or other drugs.
