What is silver?

Argental® is the trademark of a pharmaceutically manufactured synthetic medicine that uses silver sulfadiazine as its active principle , a chemical compound belonging to the line of medicines with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, with an effect on infections present in skin damage .

What is the silver used for?

  • Thanks to the action of its active principle, argental® has a bactericidal and bacteriostatic action that acts on the membrane and the cell wall, weakening and achieving the destruction of a wide variety of bacteria,  improving the health and quality of life of patients. .  
  • It is used to treat: 
    • The infection of lesions in patients with second and third degree burns, as an adjuvant in their prevention and treatment. (two)

Dosage and routes of administration of argental

The presentation of argental® is in the form of a box with a tube containing 28 g of cream, which contains 1 g micronized silver sulfadiazine. The administration of this medicine is by topical route and the dosage as a reference can be the following:

  • Argental® cream: Apply on the burn with the use of a sterile glove, a generous layer of cream once or twice a day.

Silver Side Effects

Clinical study results reflect that therapeutic treatment with argental® may cause some of the following adverse reactions in certain groups of patients :

  • Manifestation of allergic reactions in patients who have contact with any chemical component of the drug.
  • Itching or hives. 
  • Swelling of the face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat.
  • Tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing.
  • Burning and irritation.
  • Blisters, peeling, or red skin rash.
  • Change in how much and how often you urinate.
  • Fever , chills, cough, sore throat , or achy body.
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, weakness.
  • Anuria, aplastic anemia, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome .

Important: Suspend the use of this drug and consult your doctor if any of these symptoms or any other not described appear.

Contraindications and warnings of argental

The use of argental® is contraindicated in any of the following cases:

  • Patient hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula or to medications from the sulfonamide group.
  • At the end of the pregnancy period or in newborns during the first month of life.
  • During breastfeeding .

You should know: Provide all the necessary information to your doctor about your health history, before starting treatment with this medication.

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine or to any drug in the sulfonamide group.

Warnings:

  • Pharmaceutical products such as argental®, must be administered with prescription or medical prescription.
  • Follow the doctor’s instructions while using this cream.
  • The use of this type of medication in cases of kidney or liver failure can cause accumulation in the body.
  • Keep this product out of the reach of children.
