What is cabergoline?

Cabergoline is acomplex chemical, known to be an anti-hyperprolactinemic (referring to excess prolactin levels) and a stimulant of dopamine in thebrain (similar to levodopa), therefore it is considered a long-acting dopaminergic drug.

What is cabergoline for?

• Cabergoline is a direct agonist of theneurotransmitterdopamine (pleasure hormone) in thecentral nervous system (CNS), which is related to pleasurable sensations, mood, and relaxation. It is alsoan antagonist of prolactin, a hormone whose levels determine the growth of breasts in women and at the same time the production ofbreast milk (before and even after childbirth). (1)

  • Parkinson’s disease.
  • Disorders of the increase or decrease of prolactin.
  • Decreased menstruation.
  • Empty sella syndrome.
  • Tumor in the pituitary gland.

Cabergoline dosage and routes of administration

The presentations of the mostly commercial drugs with cabergoline, are in the form ofa 0.5 mg tablet of cabergolineand including the excipients of the formula, with an oral route of administration. The doses of treatment with cabergoline are as follows:

• Adults:It is recommended to administer 0.25 mg tablets, at least 2 times a week. Another highly recommended option for Parkinson’s disease is to administer a 0.5 mg tablet for the days of treatment.

Dostinex®

• Dostinex® is a commercial medication from Pfizer laboratories and is directly an antagonist of prolactin .
• Its use is indicated in the event of increased levels of breast milk or prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia).
• The main excipients in the formula are anhydrous lactose and leucine .

Anuar Sf®

• The anuar sf® is a type of commercial product belonging to the Asofarma laboratoryproducts. (5)
• It is indicated to control abnormal levels of prolactin secretion and also to stimulate dopamine.
• Specifically, it can also treat hyperthyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome (high concentration of the hormone cortisol).

Cabergoline Side Effects

The cabergoline present in different medical products has certain consequencestag. At a certain time we can recognize different common, infrequent and rare adverse effects. Consequently, the most common adverse reactions are the following:

• Vomiting .
• Vertigo.

Cabergoline Contraindications and Warnings

• Pediatric population.
• Advanced pregnancy.
