What is atarax?

Ataraxis a synthetic drug that belongs to a class of compounds called diphenylmethanes. This drug is used for the symptomatic treatment of mental disorders as well as has antihistamine and antiemetic properties.

Its active substance is hydroxyzine(hydroxyzine hydrochloride), a first-generation antihistamine. This medicine is available as 25 mg tablets and is administered orally with water.

The recommended dose of this medicine is as follows:

  • For the treatment of anxiety in adults2 to 4 tablets (50-100 mg) a day divided into 3 doses or as medically indicated.
  • For the treatment of pruritus and hives: It is advisable to start with a dose of1 tablet (25 mg) in the evening or according to the instructions of the attending physician. In children aged 12 months: 1 to 2 mg / kg day divided into several doses.
  • For pre-medication before anesthesia: A single dose of0.6 mg/kg 1 hour before surgeryor according to physician recommendation.
