What is phenazopyridine?

Phenazopyridine is an active molecule with analgesic characteristics (it is not an antibiotic). Generic drugs or a commercial medical product are made with the same compound, which specifically seek to relax the mucous area or smooth muscles of the genitourinary system (composed from the kidneys to the sphincter muscles).

It should be noted that the presentation of phenazopyridine is mostly in the form of tablets of 100 mg to 200 mg, whose route of administration is oral (and it is recommended to use them after meals). Phenazopyridine doses, in general, do not exceed one 200 mg tablet 3 times daily.

Note: A medical study mentions the present information: “Phenazopyridine is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly metabolized with reductive cleavage of the azo bondproducing aniline, 2,3,6-tri aminopyridine, p-aminophenol and acetaminophen.” (1)

What is phenazopyridine for?

The mechanism of action of phenazopyridine to date is unknown, although it has been determined that its excretion in the urine increases the acidification of the same and acts as a soothing for smooth muscles of the urinary tract. The drugs in which it is used, are for the following cases:
