Fexofenadine is a generic antihistamine medicine, whose active ingredient isFexofenadine Hydrochloride. Its mechanism of action is to act as an inhibitor of histamine, the body’s chemical related to the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
The drug fexofenadine, comes in the forms of tablets and in solution of 6 ml, 120 mg and up to 180 mg, whose route of administration is oral. Its initial doses are from120 mg to 180 mg once a day (in both adults and children) however, it may depend on the patient and their status.

What is fexofenadine for?
The drug fexofenadine is mostly used to relieve allergy symptoms, which may even occur in certain disorders such as:
1. Seasonal allergic rhinitis
Also called hayfever, this is an allergic reaction topollen (being common also in urban areas) and can persist in an affected patient, depending on the state of symptoms.
To highlight: Fexofenadine is prescribed to relieve the most common reactions of this type of rhinitis such as nasal obstruction, Sinus drainage , sneezing, red eyes or headaches and nasal itching.
2. Chronic idiopathic urticaria
This type of urticaria is characterized by the appearance of hives, itching and swelling, with the difference that it can last for more than six weeks. It is called idiopathic since it does not have a defined cause and can be very spontaneous.
You should know: This case can greatly affect children (due to common allergic reactions), where the most recommended dose of fexofenadine is 15 mg to 30 mg twice a day (in children 6 to 11 years of age).
Fexofenadine Side Effects
Fexofenadine may contain certain adverse effects, some appear frequently but other reactions may occur due to overdosage (it is not advisable to disrespect the estimated treatment), among all these effects are the following:
- Nausea.
- Dizziness.
- Tachycardias.
- Diarrhea
- Nervousness.
Important:A study mentions that: “Most reports of overdose with Fexofenadine hydrochloride Contain limited information tag. Dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth were reported. (two)
Contraindications of fexofenadine
For safety reasons with people, the drug fexofenadine is contraindicated in certain patients. Since there are people who may present biological incompatibility with the compound of this medicine. It is not recommended for the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to the active metabolite.
- Children under 2 years old.
- Renal insufficiency.
- Liver disorders.
