What is etoricoxib?

Etoricoxib is a medication belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) , called selective COX-2 inhibitors (1) . Its active ingredient is etoricoxib , a drug that works by reducing chronic and acute pain and inflammation in the joints.

Its mechanism of action is to inhibit the production of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) , a fundamental enzyme for the synthesis of prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain. The presentation of this medicine is in coated tablets of 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg and 120 mg. (two)

The administration of etoricoxib is according to the pathology of the patient, the most common being the following:

  • In cases of osteoarthritis ,  30 mg once a day up to a maximum of 60 mg , orally with water.
  • In case of rheumatoid arthritis, dose of 60 mg daily up to a maximum of 90 mg treatment with etoricoxib, orally with water.
  • In case of gout, administration of etoricoxib 120 mg once daily only in the period of acute pain for a maximum of 8 days of treatment.
  • Postoperative pain after dental surgery, etoricoxib 90 mg once daily for up to 3 days of treatment.

What is etoricoxib used for?

As we have mentioned, this drug is indicated to reduce pain in the following situations:

1. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are chronic degenerative diseases, which attack the joints of the human bone structure. They are characterized by the presence of pain and inflammation.

To highlight: Clinical studies indicate the effectiveness of the use of etoricoxib in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. (3)

2. Ankylosing spondylitis and gout

Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis, which occurs in the vertebrae of the spine, causing swelling and loss of flexibility .  

You should know: Studies support the use of etoricoxib to mitigate the pain caused by this disease. (4)

On the other hand, gout is a chronic disease caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the joints. In this sense, some studies indicate the effectiveness of this medication against pain and inflammation produced by this pathology. (5)

3. Postoperative dental pain

Pain and inflammation in the post-operative processes of dental surgery are very common, temporarily affecting the  quality of life of patients. 

For this reason, clinical research suggests that the use of etoricoxib to reduce pain after dental surgery is effective. (6)

Etoricoxib Side Effects

Patients treated with etoricoxib may manifest some of the following adverse reactions:

  • Possible allergic manifestations to some of the components of etoricoxib.
  • respiratory distress.
  • Edema in the ankles.
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.

Contraindications of etoricoxib

The use of etoricoxib is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:

  • Patients sensitive to some of the components of this drug.
  • Patients with hepatic dysfunction and insufficiency.

  • Patients suffering from fluid retention.
  • Patients at risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events.
  • If you are taking warfarin or other oral anticoagulants.
