What is benzetacil?
Benzetacil or penicillin G, is an injectable suspension antibiotic used to cure bacterial infectionsobtained from fungi of the genus “penicillium”, which is applied in the form of intravenous injection, which can cause pain and discomfort because it is a viscous content.
Also, the main composition of this medicine is benzylpenicillin or penicillin G, these being the active ingredient of this antibiotic, whose function in the blood is to be bactericidal, blocking the repair and synthesis of the bacterial wall.
Note: Benzetacil comes as an intravenous injection of 4 or 6 ml, the amount of which can vary between 600,000 IU, 1,200,000 IU and 2,400,000 IU.
The efficacy and comfort of this antibiotic can be different between the different amounts according to the organism and pathology of the patient.
What is benzetacil indicated for?
As mentioned above, Benzetacil is a deep intramuscular administration drug, which is indicated to cure infections caused by bacteria that lodge or develop in the body.
In this regard, said drug is generally applied to the upper external muscle of the gluteus. On the other hand, some of the pathologies that are treated with this medicine are:
1. Respiratory, skin and venereal infections
One of the main indications of this antibiotic is that it works as a treatment for respiratory, skin and venereal infections, since these can be caused by bacteria sensitive to the penicillin in this drug.
To highlight: A study published by the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba confirms that this drug should be used to treat infections of the upper respiratory tract such as pharyngitis, or those venereal diseases such as primary syphilis. (1)
2. Rheumatic fever
Important: A study carried out by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics on rheumatic fever explains that this infection is caused by a sequelae of(two), whose main treatment is the use of penicillins for the elimination of the germ.
3. Glomerulonephritis
Similarly, benzetacil is an antibiotic indicated to treat glomerulonephritis, since it is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria that cause this kidney disease, which can cause sequelae and must be completely eliminated with penicillin.
To highlight: A study carried out at the Pedro de Elizalde Children’s General Hospital in Argentina confirms that this infection is caused by group A StreptococcusBacteria , whose main treatment is antibiotics with penicillin.(3)
contraindications of benzetacil
Benzetacil is a medication that also has contraindications , since it can cause symptoms or other infections that worsen the patient’s state of health, for which the following precautions must be taken into account:
1. Sensitivity to components
One of the main contraindications of this medicine is that patients are sensitive to its components , since the reaction that the body can cause can generate harmful symptoms such as vomiting, nausea or fever.
Tip: It is recommended that people who are going to be administered benzetacil have a Medical Check -up first, to determine if they are sensitive to the components contained in penicillin, especially young children.
2. Kidney and liver problems
Kidney problems are clear warnings of the contraindication of benzetacil, since it can cause abdominal pain or fever, but even so, the doctor can adjust the dose to minimize the harmful risks to the kidneys in patients with kidney failure.
Similarly, liver problems are contraindications for this antibiotic, because the liver may not be able to purify them correctly, causing further deterioration for this organ and the possibility of causing hepatotoxicity.
3. Pregnancy and lactation
This suspension antibiotic should be administered under the supervision of a doctor in pregnant or lactating women, since it is a special and unique situation that can negatively affect the mother or the baby.
4. Interactions with other drugs
Lastly, benzetacil is contraindicated with interactions with other drugs , since alterations in the nervous system may occur depending on the drugs or even cause risks of hepatotoxicity in the patient and make it difficult to clear them in the liver.
Some drugs that can cause a reaction with penicillin are Probenecid and tetracycline , so the doctor should be notified if another drug is being taken.
Tip:Toconsultation with the doctor is recommended if the patient is taking other medications, since they can increase the health risk by causing other complications or affecting the effectiveness of the drugs on the body.
What are the adverse reactions of benzetacil?
The use of benzylpenicillin can generate adverse effects, possibly causing health complications for the patient. Therefore, it is necessary to know them before it is applied, these being the following:
1. Skin allergies
In case of having an allergic skin reaction 24 hours later, you should consult your doctor quickly , to determine the cause of these effects and evaluate a possible treatment, in order to avoid any risk to the patient.
Some skin reactions from this medicine may be swelling, rash, redness at the injection site, rosettes, itching, or skin rash.
2. Discomfort at the injection site
After the administration of benzetacil, discomfort may appear in the area where it was applied for a long time, in which pain or swelling may be felt at the injection site.
Note: Extreme caution should be exercised in the event that a purple or black discoloration of the skin begins after the injection, as well as watch for muscle weakness or numbness in the arm, buttock, or leg where the medication was applied.
3. Gastrointestinal disorders
It is very important that people with gastric pathologies are monitored by a specialist doctor, to avoid possible complications from the use of this medication.
Gastrointestinal disorders can be reactions caused after the use of this antibiotic , in which symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain may manifest, requiring better care if they occur.
Note: Although these symptoms are rare to occur, it should be taken into account that they can become intense and unbearable pain , so it is recommended to seek medical attention quickly to make a diagnosis and apply a treatment for it.
4. Headache
Another complication that benzetacil can cause are headaches, which can be confused with sleep or another similar causetag. These are not serious effects, as the pain is mild to moderate and is usually only temporary.
5. Alterations in coagulation
Finally, alterations in blood coagulation can be health complications caused by the use of benzetacil, because it causes platelets to be unable to function properly, and can cause bleeding in the patient.
