What is bactrim?

Bactrim® is a drug composed of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim as active ingredients, which aremedicines used for the treatment of infectionsof a bacterial nature. Together they are called bactrim®, being this product made byRoche laboratories(1)

The presentation of bactrim® is intablets of 400 and 800 mg, in addition to a bottle with oral solution of 120 ml. It is also found inampoules for antibacterial and antiprotozoal chemotherapeutic therapies.

Important: Due to its nature and mechanism of action, its administration must be supervised by a specialist doctor, with the dosage every 12 hours.

What is bactrim for?

Bactrim® in its spectrum of action, hasdifferent functions and applicationsin health, which will be mentioned and briefly explained below:

1. Respiratory and ear infections

Within respiratorydiseasesthere is acategory of infectious nature, which are produced by different bacteria and viruses. Similarly, it happens with ear infections, usually being the most common bacteriaStreptococcus pneumoniaeandHaemophilus influenzae.

To highlight: Because bactrim® is a combination of two antibiotics, it is used to treat a wide variety of infections and even to prevent the development of pneumonia, even allowing the reduction of acute exacerbations that are a consequence of bronchitis . (two)

2. Urogenital and gastrointestinal infections

Urogenital infections are also known as bacterial urinary tract infections, where external agents appear in the bladder and kidneys, and multiply in the urine. Bactrim® is indicated in uncomplicated cases, allowing the reduction of symptoms and prompt recovery.

Note: In the case of gastrointestinal infections, bactrim® reduces the disorders produced and also decreases the adverse effects, which are usually generated due to the intake of antibiotics in these cases. (3)

Bactrim Side Effects

Like all drugs, there is a list of possible side effectsthat can occur when used in treatments. We mention below which are those of bactrim® for your knowledge and contemplation:

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Loss of appetite and skin rashes.
  • Headache and confusion.

Important: In case of persistence of side effects after discontinuation of the drug, it is important to seek medical attention.

Bactrim contraindications
