What is trimebutine?

Trimebutine is a synthetic medication, whose active principle is of the same name, which is used for the treatment of pain and other abdominal disorders. It has analgesic and antispasmodic properties, which regulate intestinal movements.

What is trimebutine used for?

  • Trimebutine is a medication indicated for the treatment of digestive and gastrointestinal pain. Regulates the movements of the digestive tract, through the selective blocking of acetylcholine muscarinic receptors with antidopaminergic action. (1)
  • It is used to treat:
    • Dyspeptic functional gastric disorders.
    • Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome or functional colopathies. (two)
    • Acute and chronic abdominal pain. 
    • Reinforcement for diarrhea in case of gastroenteritis.
    • Gastroduodenal ulcer. (3)

Dosage and routes of administration of trimebutine

The commercial presentation of this medicine is in conventional release tablets of 100 mg and 200 mg, suspension and in 5 ml vials. Oral administration of this drug is as follows: 

  • Tablets: To treat irritable bowel syndrome, an initial dose of 300 mg to 400 mg per day orally is used, children over 12 years of age and adults divided into 2 doses before meals.
  • Trimebutine injectable solution: It is used in those cases where there are gastrointestinal discomforts that prevent the use of tablets or capsules and in endoscopic procedures of the biliary tract .
  • Oral suspension: Depending on age, up to 1 year: 12 mg 2-3 times/day ; 1-3 years: 24 mg 2-3 times/day; 3-5 years: 48 mg 3 times/day every 6 to 8 hours

Colypan®

Polybutin®

  • This medication is indicated for gastroduodenal ulcer gastritis and vomiting , pylorus spasms and functional colopathies.

Espabion®

  • The espabion® regulates bowel movements, both to increase and decrease them.

trimebutine side effects

Treatment with trimebutine may cause some of the following side effects in certain patients:

  • Allergic reactions due to contact with any of the components of trimebutine.
  • Dry mouth and nausea. 
  • Vomiting and diarrhea. 
  • Constipation and epigastric pain. 
  • It can cause certain disorders in the Central Nervous System such as headaches, dizziness or drowsiness.

You should know: If you have any of the reactions mentioned above, it is recommended to suspend the use of the medication and consult with the treating physician.

Contraindications and warnings of trimebutine

The use of trimebutine is contraindicated in the following circumstances:

  • In patients with hypersensitivity to trimebutine or some of its components.
  • Do not administer during pregnancy, due to the lack of studies on its safety in this population.
  • Treatment with this drug should not be started during lactation either.

Avoid if you have:

  • Irritation of the digestive tract due to alcoholic beverages.
  • Treatment with other drugs, without consulting the doctor.
  • If you observe any unfavorable reaction in the body.

Warnings:

  • Before using this medicine, you should consult your doctor for its administration and dosage.
  • This medication should be administered at least 15 minutes before meals.
  • In people with renal insufficiency and with myasthenia gravis (acute muscle weakness), special precautions must be present.
