AB sennosides area type of active substance, which is present in many generic drug products or commercial lines. They are a type oflaxativeextracted directlyfrom the natural leaves of the plant namedSen or Senna, of theFabaceae family.
What are AB sennosides for?
- AB sennosides are laxatives, which are responsible for stimulating the colon to increase theaccumulation of water and electrolytes in it. In addition, they are considered releases of anthraquinone glycosides, compounds capable of purging thatirritate the gastric mucosaand promote intestinal motility for the evacuation of feces. (1)
- It is used to treat:
- Constipationor constipation due to poor eating habits.
- Excrete bacteria or parasites.
- Stimulate fecal incontinence.
Dosage and routes of administration of AB sennosides
AB sennosides are commonly found in tablets or tablets, in addition to oral solutions, with an oral route of administration. On the other hand, doses of sennosides A B are expressed as follows in tablets:
- Adults: Administer 1 to 2 tablets before bedtime.
Note: There are no safe studies regarding the use of these drugsin a pediatric population, i.e. children, especially those over 12 years of age. Therefore,this treatment should be established by means of a medical prescription.

Punctual®
- It has a laxative effect and is used for symptomatic treatment
- It is achieved in the presentation of oral solutions or drops, with a total of 30 mg measured of the active substance and a glycerol excipient.
Pursenid®
- Pursenid® is a glycoside stimulant product created by Consumer Healthcare Laboratories . (3)
- It has in its composition laxatives and sennoside salts A B , apart from excipients such as glucose, sucrose, stearic acid and corn starch.
- It is achieved in the presentation of containers with 20 tablets or dragees of 12 mg .
Modane®
- Modane® is a product patented by the Korhispana laboratory . (4)
- The drug may take at least 6 hours, or 12 hours total, to complete its absorption in the small intestine.
- It is found in presentations of dragees or tablets of approximately 12 mg , with oral administration.
punctualex®
- Punctualex® is a commercial product from Lainco laboratories .
- It differs by containing larger excipients that help the laxative work, such as Ethanol or methyl parahydroxybenzoate .
- It is also marketed in the form of oral solution vials, with a number of approximately 150 mg of the active ingredient and inert substances.
Side Effects of AB Sennosides
AB sennosides can cause certain adverse effects during their administration, in case of presenting them and if they are prolonged, the treatment should be suspended immediatelyto see your doctor or pharmacist. Among these side effects are the following:
Contraindications and warnings of sennosides AB
The use of sennosides AB is not allowed in certain patients, since they may have a negative interactionduring treatment with these drugs. Therefore it is contraindicated in the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to the formula.
- Appendicitis .
- Fecal bleeding .
- Obstruction in the intestine.
- Women in the stage of pregnancy and lactation .
Avoid them if you have:
- Gastrointestinal diseases .
- Paralytic ileus (intestinal obstruction in infants).
- Abdominal pain.
- Ulcerative colitis.
Warnings:
- Use this medication preferably with a prescription.
- This drug should be kept out of the reach of children.
- Keep well sealed and in a cool place.
- Do not combine the use of this drug with other medications during treatment.
