What is pirifur used for?

  • Thanks to the mechanism of action of its active ingredients, pirifur® acts as a bacteriostatic (3) , since it inhibits bacterial growth and reproduction , in addition to relieving pain, burning, irritation and discomfort in the urinary tract caused by urinary tract infections. bacteria such as E. coli, Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella sp., among others.
  • It is used to treat:
    • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections and associated symptoms caused by susceptible gram -negative bacteria.
    • Inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract.

Dosage and routes of administration of pirifur

Pirifur® is sold in tablets with 500 mg of nalidixic acid and 50 mg of phenazopyridine . The route of administration is oral and the dosage as a reference may be as follows:

  • Tablets: The suggested dose is 2 tablets 2 to 4 times a day, according to the medical diagnosis.

Side effects of pirifur

Clinical data indicate that treatment with pirifur® may cause some of the following adverse effects in a certain patient population:

  • Possible allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
  • In neonatal and pediatric patients, increased intracranial pressure with bulging of the anterior fontanel, papilledema, and headache.
  • Dyspepsia, abdominal pain , nausea, vomiting and diarrhea .
  • Cutaneous rash, pruritus, hives, angioedema, joint stiffness.
  • Drowsiness, weakness, paresthesias and vertigo.
  • Toxic psychoses or mild seizures.
  • Epilepsy or cerebral arteriosclerosis in the case of overdose.
  • Palsy of the sixth cranial nerve has been observed in rare cases.

Important: If you observe the appearance of any of these symptoms during the administration of pirifur®, please discontinue its use and notify your doctor .

Contraindications and warnings of pirifur

The use of pirifur® is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Known hypersensitivity to nalidixic acid or phenazopyridine.
  • Patients with liver and kidney failure.
  • Persons under 18 years of age.
  • Patients in case of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
  • In the period of pregnancy.
  • During breastfeeding .

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to nalidixic acid or phenazopyridine.
