What is norphenephrine?

Norphenephrine is a chemical compound classified for medicine as an active principle , which belongs to the line of medicines with sympathomimetic properties with an effect mainly on the circulatory system . (1)

What is norphenephrine used for?

  • Thanks to the mechanism of action of its active principle, norphenephrine acts by raising the blood pressure associated with sinus bradycardia, due to the activity of the vagal reflex. This is how it manages to balance low blood pressure in patients suffering from episodes of hypotension for various reasons . 
  • It is used to treat: 
    • Hypotension of pregnancy. (two)
    • Hypotonic neurocirculatory dystonia.
    • Arterial hypotension.
    • Orthostatic hypotension.

Dosage and routes of administration of norphenephrine

The usual presentation of norphenephrine is in solution drops in a dropper bottle, with 24 ml of norphenephrine hydrochloride 1 gr. The route of administration of this medicine is oral and the dosage as a reference can be the following:

  • Drop solution: Administration of 30 drops (equivalent to 1 ml = 10 mg) is usually recommended before each meal.

AS Cor®

  • AS Cor® is a sympathomimetic with predominantly alpha-adrenergic activity, which uses norphenephrine as its active ingredient.
  • It is used in the treatment of arterial hypotension .


  • Frinver® is the trademark of a synthetic medication, which uses norphenylephrine hydrochloride as its active ingredient. 
  • This medication is used for the treatment of hypotension of pregnancy and orthostatic hypotension.

norphenephrine side effects

Therapeutic treatment with norphenephrine may cause in certain patients some of the following adverse reactions: 

  • Possible allergic reactions due to patient contact with any component of the formula.
  • Headache , tremor and diaphoresis.
  • Tachycardia.
  • Extreme bradycardia. 
  • Dyspnea, weakness, anorexia, nausea and vomiting .
  • Arrhythmias, angina pectoris and heart failure . 
  • Cerebral hemorrhage , pulmonary edema, lactic acidosis.
  • Anxiety and psychopathic states.

Important: If the patient experiences any of these symptoms while using this drug, please discontinue use and consult your doctor.

Norphenephrine Contraindications and Warnings

The use of this drug is contraindicated in the following cases: 

  • Patient hypersensitivity to any of the chemical components of the formula.
  • Patients with arterial hypertension and glaucoma.
  • People with severe heart disease.

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to norphenephrine.
