What is macrodantine?

Macrodantin® is a synthetic medicine whose active principle is nitrofurantoin , a chemical compound that acts as an antibiotic for the treatment of infections caused by germs and bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, among many others, that cause discomfort at the level of the urinary tract in people of both sexes. (1)

What is macrodantine used for?

  • Macrodantin® in urine has bactericidal power , that is, its highly reactive components alter ribosomal proteins and other bacterial macromolecules, resulting in inhibition of aerobic metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, and bacterial wall synthesis, causing the death of bacteria .
  • It is used to treat: 
    • Cystitis.
    • Cystourethritis.
    • Asymptomatic bacteriuria.
    • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in pregnant women, caused by susceptible bacteria. 
    • Antibiotic prophylaxis for the presence of anatomical and/or functional abnormalities of the urinary tract. (3)
    • Prophylaxis for surgical procedures, pelvic prolapse and urinary incontinence.
    • Urinary tract infections not complicated by the use of a bladder catheter. (4)

Dosage and routes of administration of macrodantin

The presentation of macrodantina® is in capsules with 50 mg and 100 mg of nitrofurantoin, in a box of 40 capsules. The administration is orally and the dose for information may be as follows:

  • Adults: 50 to 100 mg 4 times a day.
  • Children over 12 years of age or weighing over 40 kg: 1 50 mg capsule every 6 hours.
  • Children over 12 years of age weighing less than 40 kg: 5 to 7 mg/kg per day in 24 hours, divided into 4 doses every 6 hours.

Macrodantine Side Effects

The use of macrodantina® can cause in certain patients, some of the following adverse reactions :

  • Possible allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
  • Possible blood disorders such as hemolytic anemia and eosinophilia.
  • Fever , cough and chest pain.
  • Hepatitis risk.
  • Vomiting , diarrhea and nausea.
  • In isolated cases, deterioration of respiratory function may occur.
  • Steven Johnson syndrome.

Important: If any of these symptoms appear during treatment with macrodantin®, stop using it and consult your doctor .

Contraindications and warnings of macrodantine

Treatment with macrodantina® is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
  • In children under 12 years of age.
  • In patients with renal insufficiency.
  • In women during pregnancy or lactation .

You should know: Before starting treatment with macrodantina®, it is advisable to provide all the information about your health history to your doctor.

Avoid if you have:

  • Kidney impairment.
  • Anuria (lack of urine) or oliguria (decreased urine output).

Warnings:

  • This pharmaceutical product must be administered by prescription or medical prescription.
  • Macrodantin® in capsules should be administered with food to optimize its absorption.
  • Macrodantine® can cause drug interactions, if it is combined with other drugs for other pathologies that can worsen the patient’s health condition. 
  • Follow the instructions of your treating physician during treatment with macrodantin®.
  • Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
  • Store in a cool dry place.
