What is glimepiride used for?
- Glimepiride is a second-generation sulfonylurea, which has both an acute and chronic hypoglycemic effect or action (lowering blood sugar levels), in addition to stimulating the release or secretion of insulin levels (which allows the passage of glucose ) in the beta cells of the pancreas in people with diabetes. - Diabetes mellitus type 2
Dosage and routes of administration of glimepiride
Glimepiride can usually be found in a box presentation with 15 tablets of 4 mg of the active ingredient or 15 tablets of 5 mg, whose route of administration is oral. The estimated doses of generic glimepiride are:
- Adults: The use of 1 mg or 2 mg tablets once a day is recommended. A dose of approximately 8 mg should not be exceeded.

- It is allowed to be administered with insulin and antidiabetic drugs, but it is not recommended for type 1 diabetes.
Roname®
- The roname® is a product belonging to the groups of drugs made in the Lacer laboratories . (3)
- It is prescribed to lower blood sugar levels, in the form of tablets for oral administration and containing 2 mg to 4 mg of glimepiride.
- It has in its composition certain excipients such as lactose or potato starch.
Tandemact®
- Tandemact® is a drug produced by Rubio Pharma laboratories . (4)
- In its chemical structure it has two very efficient metabolites, pioglitazone and glimepiride .
- This drug is indicated as an antidiabetic , to control the level of sugar in the blood.
Glimepiride standard®
- Glimepiride normon® is a drug belonging to the group of Normon Pharma. (5)
- It has a presentation in a box of tablets with 4 mg and up to 5 mg, whose route of administration is oral.
- It is indicated as an antidiabetic, in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus .
Side Effects of Glimepiride
Glimepiride can have certain adverse effects during its use in the treatment of the patient, recommending to be careful of its appearances. Among the best known reactions are the following:
Important: The use of any drug with glimepiride should be suspended and go to your respective doctor, if the secondary reactions come to strongly affect the patient’s health and cause complications.
Contraindications and warnings of glimepiride
Glimepiride is well absorbed, however it is not indicated for certain patients in order to prevent negative results in the person’s health. Medicines with this substance are not recommended in the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance.
- Allergies to sulfonylureas or sulfonamides.
- Diabetes type 1.
- Diabetic eat.
Avoid it if you have:
- Pre diabetic coma.
- Renal insufficiency.
- Liver failure.
- Pregnancy.
Warnings:
- It is preferable to use the products with said substance under a doctor’s prescription.
- Keep this drug out of the reach of children.
- Prevent its use in patients with lactose intolerance .
- Reserve the medication at room temperature.
