What is genoprazole?

Genoprazol® is the name of the trademark of a synthetic medicine that uses omeprazole as active principle, which belongs to the line of medicines called proton pump inhibitors, with an effect on the imbalance of stomach acid .

What is genoprazole used for?

  • Due to its mechanism of action, genoprazole® performs a rapid inhibition of acid secretion in the stomach through its specific effect on the acid pump in parietal cells. This action favors the relief of the annoying symptoms associated with gastric hyperacidity. (two)
  • It is used to treat: 
    • Acid peptic disease such as duodenal ulcer , gastric ulcer, reflux esophagitis , and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome .
    • Gastric or duodenal ulcers and refractory reflux esophagitis, caused by other antisecretory drugs.
    • Gastritis , heartburn and heartburn that generate pain, burning or burning in the pit of the stomach.
    • As protection of the gastric mucosa against the action of some drugs.

Dosage and routes of administration of genoprazole

Genoprazol® is presented in a box with capsules, whose omeprazole content is 20 mg. This drug is administered orally and the dosage as a reference may be as follows:

  • Benign duodenal and gastric ulcer: The recommended dose is 1 capsule of 20 mg once daily.
  • Reflux oesophagitis: 1 capsule of 20 mg once a day.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: This disease is usually treated with a dose between 20 to 120 mg/day.

Genoprazole Side Effects

Clinical data have indicated that genoprazole® therapy has caused some of the following adverse effects listed below in certain patients:

  • Possible occurrence of allergic reactions due to patient contact with any component of the formula.
  • Skin rash or pruritus, skin photosensitivity, erythema multiforme and alopecia.
  • Arthralgia, muscle weakness and myalgia.
  • Headache , paresthesia, drowsiness, insomnia and vertigo.
  • Reversible mental confusion, agitation, depression, and hallucination .
  • Diarrhea , constipation and flatulence.
  • In isolated cases stomatitis and gastrointestinal candidiasis.
  • Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia.
  • Discomfort in the abdominal area such as bloating in the stomach, slow digestion, a feeling of being very full and general discomfort.

Important: If these adverse effects appear during therapeutic treatment with Genoprazole®, please discontinue use and notify your doctor .

Contraindications and warnings of genoprazole

Treatment with Genoprazole® is contraindicated in any of the cases mentioned below:

  • Patient hypersensitivity to omeprazole or proton pump inhibitor drugs such as esomeprazole , among others.
  • In patients suspected of suffering from malignant gastric ulcer.
  • During the pregnancy period.
  • During breastfeeding .
  • In children, since its safety has not yet been demonstrated in this patient population.

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to omeprazole or proton pump inhibitor drugs.
  • Undiagnosed gastrointestinal disorders.
