Fosfomycin is a type of chemical substance present invarious generic drugs and also commercial line, which has specifically antibiotic and bactericidal characteristics of broad spectrum, being ideal for certain germs that cause infections.
What is fosfomycin for?
- Fosfomycin is responsible forinhibiting the synthesis and biosynthesis of the peptidoglycan wall (the bacterial wall) and the enzymes ofgram-positive or gram-negativebacteria, in their interaction or multiplication with respect to the host that is infecting. (1)
- It is used to treat:
- Urinary tract infections.
- Dermatological infections.
- Gastrointestinal infections.
- Infections by sensitive germs (example: Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria spp, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.).
Dosage and routes of administration of fosfomycin
Fosfomycin is usually available invarious box presentations, including blisters. injectable solutions, capsules, granules and powders, most often havingan oral route of administration. The most relevant doses with fosfomycin in capsule form are as follows:
- Adults: It is recommended to administer 1 or 2 capsules with fosfomycin in the treatment, at intervals of six to eight hours.

Fossin®

- It is available in a box presentation with a Content of 12 capsules and up to 6 capsules of 500 mg.

Fosfomycin Side Effects
Fosfomycin can bring with it different adverse effects, which are normal reactionsregardless of the commercial drug that is being used. Among the most notable reactions are:
- Headache.
- Diarrhea .
- Abdominal pain.
- Rhinitis.
Important: Suspend the use of this drug and see your doctor immediately, if you experience adverse effects that seriously affect your health.
Contraindications and warnings of fosfomycin
Fosfomycin is a substance that is not recommended for a certain patient population, in order to prevent negative interactions against certain diseases that can harm the delicate health of the person. It is not indicated for the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.
- Severe kidney failure.
- Pregnancy and lactation .
Avoid it if you have:
- Hemodialysis.
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Renal insufficiency.
Warnings:
- It is preferable to administer this substance under a previous medical prescription.
- Keep medicines with this chemical out of the reach of children.
- Fosfomycin drugs must be kept sealed.
- Keep the medicine stored at room temperature to prevent deterioration.
