What is dimethicone magaldrate?

Dimethicone magaldrate is a medication combined with two active ingredients that are magaldrate and dimethicone , which belong to the line of drugs with antacid and antiflatulent effect , which help to relieve certain gastrointestinal discomforts.

Dosage and routes of administration of dimethicone magaldrate

Dimethicone magaldrate is usually available in a bottle as a gel, suspension sachets, and chewable tablets. The route of administration is oral and the dose for information may be as follows:

  • In sachets for suspension: 1-2 sachets or 10 ml tablespoons 2 times a day .
  • Tablets: 1 tablet, once or twice a day .
  • Gel: 1 tablespoon of 10 ml, 6 times a day .

  • It is used as an antacid, auxiliary in the treatment of acid-peptic disease, gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, among other conditions.

Madrilcan®

  • Madrilcan® is a synthetic combination drug , which contains magaldrate and dimethicone as active ingredients in vial presentation.
  • It is indicated for acid peptic diseases and gastritis.

Dimethicone Magaldrate Side Effects

Treatment with dimethicone magaldrate may cause some of the following side effects in certain patients:

  • Possible appearance of allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
  • Loose stools, diarrhea , or constipation .
  • Some gastric disorders such as vomiting , stomach pain, flatulence or loss of appetite.
  • On some occasions, metallic taste.

Important: Please discontinue use and consult your doctor if any of these symptoms or any other not included in the list appear during treatment with dimethicone magaldrate.

Contraindications and warnings of dimethicone magaldrate

The use of dimethicone magaldrate  is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the formula’s components.
  • Patients with renal failure.
  • Patients with anachlorhydria, kidney disease and urinary tract stones.
  • In women during the period of pregnancy or during breastfeeding .
  • Children under 16 years of age.
