Clioquinol isa chemical substance classified as active ingredient, which belongs to the line of antiseptic drugswith antibacterial and broad-spectrum antifungal effect, which is used to treatskin diseases. (1)
What is clioquinol for?
- The mechanism of action of clioquinol allows it to bea bacteriostatic and non-bactericidal, preventing the development and proliferation of bacteria and fungi, eliminating the microorganisms that cause the different skin infections. (2)
- It is used to treat:
- Pyodermitis.
- Superficial mycosis such as eczema, athlete’s foot, scabies and ringworm caused by susceptible fungi.
- Minor burns and scrapes.
- Fungal otitis externa. (3)
Dosage and routes of administration of clioquinol
The presentation of clioquinolis in ointment, cream or ointmentwith 3 gr of clioquinol. The route of administrationis topicaland the dosage for informational purposes may be as follows:
- Adults: Apply a thin layer to the affected area at least twice a day.
- Children: In children over two years of age, apply a thin layer on the affected area at least twice a day.

Yoquin®
- Yoquin® is a synthetic drug made from clioquinol as the active ingredient.
- It is used to treat pyoderma and some skin mycoses.
Otological® Menaderm
- Menaderm otologic® is a medication that contains Beclometasone and clioquinol as active ingredients .
- It is used in the treatment of of inflammatory and itchy conditions of the outer ear with infection.
Cuatrocrem®
- Cuatrocrem® is a medicine made with the active ingredients betamethasone , gentamicin, clioquinol and tolnaftate, which comes in cream form.
- It is indicated in the treatment of inflammatory manifestations of dermatosis and in complicated cases with mixed infection.
Dermocuad®
- Dermocuad® is a cream medicine made from clioquinol, the main active ingredient in its composition.
- It is an adjuvant in the treatment of mild to moderate dermatosis, infected with bacteria or fungi susceptible to clioquinol.
Cyoquinol Side Effects
Therapeutic treatment with clioquinol Can cause some of the following adverse effects in a certain patient population:
- Possible allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
- Itching, burning and redness.
- Edema and skin rash.
- Thyrotoxicosis when use is very long.
- Interference with thyroid function tests.

Contraindications and warnings of clioquinol
The use of clioquinol is contraindicated in the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formula or to quinoline derivatives.
- Patients under two years of age.
- During the period of pregnancy or breastfeeding .
- Children under two years old.
You should know: To start treatment with this drug, you must provide all information about your health history to your doctor.
Avoid if you have:
- History of hypersensitivity to iodine or quinoline derivatives.
- Very serious and extensive skin lesions.
Warnings:
- Pharmaceutical products such as clioquinol, must be administered with a prescription or prescription.
- Clioquinol is not suitable for use under occlusive dressings.
- This product should not be applied near the eyes or lesions caused by vaccines, viruses or tuberculosis.
- It should not be applied to areas that are too extensive or eroded, since this drug is absorbed in significant quantities through the skin.
