Clavipen®is the registered brand name of a medicine, which uses the combination of two active ingredients, amoxicillin(1) and clavulanic acid(2), two chemical compounds belonging to the line of medicineswith antibiotic effecton those bacteria that cause infections.

What is the clavipen for?
- Thanks to its active ingredients, clavipen®becomes a powerful broad-spectrum bactericidal drug, because clavulanic acid and amoxicillin become sensitive to germs producing ß-lactamases. This actionfavors the elimination of bacteria that cause infectionsin the respiratory tract and in other areas of the body.
- It is used to treat:
- Upper respiratory tract infectionssuch astonsillitis,sinusitis, pharyngitis and otitis media.
- Lower respiratory tract infections such as acute and chronicbronchitis, lobar pneumonia, and bronchopneumonia.
- Cystitis.
- Pyelonephritis.
- Urethritis of gonococcal origin.
- Osteomyelitis.
- Skinand soft tissue infections.
- Intra-abdominal sepsis.
- In general, to eliminateGram-positiveandGram-negative, aerobic and susceptible anaerobic bacteria or strains.
Dosage and routes of administration of clavipen
Clavipen® is sold in a box with amoxicillin trihydrate tablets equivalent to 500 mg of amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate equivalent to 125 mg of clavulanic acid and in a bottle with suspensionin different concentrations. In both cases, the administrationis orally and the dosage for information may be as follows:
- Tablets: Adults one tablet every 8 hours for 7 to 10 days of treatment according to medical indication and in children the dosage will be calculated based on body weight.
- Suspension 125 mg/5 ml:For children of 14 kg, 4 ml every 8 hours; from 13 kg, 3.5 ml every 8 hours; between 11 and 12 kg, 3.0 ml every 8 hours; between 9 and 10 kg, 2.5 ml every 8 hours; between 7 and 8 kg, 2.0 ml every 8 hours and from 5 to 6 kg, 1.5 ml every 8 hours and in all cases for a period between 7 and 10 days of continuous treatment.
Clavipen Side Effects
The therapeutic treatment with clavipen® can cause some of the following adverse effects in certain types of patients :
- Possible appearance of allergic reactions due to contact with any component of the formula.
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea .
- Alterations in liver function.
- Hematological alterations, drug fever and acute interstitial nephritis.
- Pseudomembranous colitis.
- Leukopenia, neutropenia and thrombocytosis.
Important: If the appearance of any of these symptoms or another not included in the list occurs, please stop using it and consult your doctor .
Clavipen contraindications and warnings
The use of clavipen® is contraindicated in any of the following circumstances:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the components of this medication or to Penicillins .
- People with a creatinine clearance of less than 30 ml/minute.
- Patients with cross-sensitivity to other β-lactam antibiotics, such as cephalosporins.
You should know: Provide all the information about your health historyto your doctor, before starting treatment with Clavipen®.
Avoid if you have:
- History of hypersensitivity to penicillins or clavulanic acid.
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction induced by amoxicillin or clavulanic acid.
Warnings:
- Pharmaceutical products such as clavipen®, must be administered with a prescription or prescription.
- Although this medicine represents a low risk during pregnancy or breastfeeding, its administration in these cases should be supervised by a doctor.
- This drug should be administered with caution, in patients with evidence of liver dysfunction.
- Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
- Store this product in a cool, dry place.
