What is the celestone?
Celestone® is the name of the trademark of a synthetic medication that uses betamethasone as its active ingredient , a chemical compound belonging to the line of corticosteroid anti-inflammatory medications, with an effect on various inflammatory processes in the body . (1)

What is the celestone used for?
- Thanks to the mechanism of action of its active principle, celestone® reduces the release of histamine through the migration of neutrophils to the areas of inflammation, decreasing capillary permeability, edema and the accumulation of mast cells.
- It is used to treat:
- Rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue.
- Dermatological, allergic, endocrine and ophthalmic inflammatory processes. (3)
- Respiratory, haematological, gastrointestinal and other inflammatory processes that respond to corticosteroid treatment.
Dosage and routes of administration of celestone
The presentation of celestone® is in the form of a box with vials or a vial, which contains betamethasone sodium phosphate equivalent to 4.0 mg of betamethasone. The administration of this drug is intravenous, intramuscular or intra-articular and the dosage for information may be as follows:
- Celestone® solution for injection: In adults, depending on the severity of the disease, up to a maximum of 8 mg of betamethasone per day may be recommended. For pediatric use, the dose may range from 0.02 to 0.125 mg/kg of body weight per day.
Celestone Side Effects
Results of clinical studies have described that treatment with celestone®, being a steroid drug, can cause some of the following adverse effects in a certain population of patients :
- Possible occurrence of allergic reactions due to patient contact with any chemical component of the formula.
- Hypertension, congestive heart failure.
- Sodium retention , potassium loss , hypokalemic alkalosis and fluid retention .
- Muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, loss of muscle mass, progression of symptoms in myasthenia gravis and osteoporosis.
- Peptic ulcer , pancreatitis, bloating, ulcerative esophagitis , hiccups.
- Impaired wound healing, skin atrophy, fragile and thin skin, petechiae and ecchymosis.
- Possible redness of the area where the injection was given.
- Seizures, increased intracranial pressure, vertigo, and headache .
- Euphoria, major depression , personality changes, hyperirritability, and insomnia .
- Manifestations of latent diabetes mellitus, increased requirements for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents in diabetic patients.
Important: If the patient observes the appearance of any of the symptoms indicated or another not described, please discontinue its use and notify your doctor .
Contraindications and warnings of celestone
The use of celestone® is contraindicated in the following cases:
- Patient hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
- In patients with systemic mycoses.
- In patients suffering from renal insufficiency.
- During the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding .
- In patients who are under treatment with medicines such as acetylsalicylic acid .
You should know: Provide all information regarding your medical history to your doctor, before starting treatment with this drug.
Avoid if you have:
- History of hypersensitivity to betamethasone or corticosteroid medications.
- History of disorders in the digestive system such as Crohn’s disease.
- History of affective disorders due to the use of corticosteroids.
- History of diabetes, any pathology in the liver or Cushing’s syndrome.
- History of respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis.
Warnings:
- Pharmaceutical products such as celestone®, must be administered with prescription or medical prescription.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions while using this drug.
- Do not exceed recommended dose.
- Administration of this drug into an infected area or into an unstable joint is not recommended.
- Keep this drug stored in a safe, dry and cool place.
- Keep this product out of the reach of children.
