What is ceftrex?

Ceftrex®is the brand name of a semi-synthetic pharmaceutical medicinethat contains as active substanceceftriaxone, a chemical compound belonging to the line of third-generation beta-lactam cephalosporin antibiotic medicines, with an effect onsome bacteria that cause infectionsin the body.

What is ceftrex for?

  • Thanks to the mechanism of action of its active ingredient, ceftrex®acts against a wide spectrum of gram-positive andgram-negativebacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of mucopeptides in the bacterial cell wall, causing its weakening causing cell lysis. This actioneliminates the bacteria that cause infections,as well as the associated symptoms. (2)
  • It is used to treat:
    • Pneumonia, mild pelvic inflammatory disease.
    • Early syphilis with or without ophthalmic involvement.
    • Neurosyphilis.
    • Invasive infections such as periorbital cellulitis, oral cellulitis, mastoiditis, septic arthritis, deep abscesses, osteomyelitis, epiglottitis,cellulitisof the extremities, empyema, sinusitistonsillitisand urinary tract infections.
    • Other infections such as bacterial meningitis and chemoprophylaxis of people in contact with these patients.
    • Acute otitis media in children, prophylaxis for infective endocarditis after dental, respiratory or surgical procedures.
    • Contaminated or potentially contaminated surgery.

Dosage and routes of administration of ceftrex

The presentation of ceftrex® is in a box with a vialcontaining ceftriaxone sodium equivalent to 500 mg of powdered ceftriaxone to reconstitute. The administrationis by intramuscular or intravenous route and the dosage as a reference can be the following:

  • Adults: 1 g to 2 g divided into two doses per day depending on the severity or type of infection.
  • Children: 50 to 75 mg/kg of weight per day.

Ceftrex Side Effects

Treatment with ceftrex® may cause, in a certain patient population , some of the following side effects:

  • Possible allergic reactions due to patient contact with any component of the formula.
  • Diarrhea , nausea, Vomitingabdominalpain , dysgeusia, and flatulence.
  • Skin rash and itching.
  • Fever , chills, and serum sickness.
  • Bronchospasms.
  • Local reactions at the injection site.

Important: If the patient experiences any of these symptoms during treatment with ceftrex®, please discontinue use and notify your physician .

Contraindications and warnings of ceftrex

The use of ceftrex® is contraindicated in the following circumstances:

  • Patient hypersensitivity to the components of the formula.
  • In newborns with jaundice due to the risk of encephalopathy due to hyperbilirubinemia.
  • During the period of pregnancy without medical approval.
  • During breastfeeding .

You should know: Before starting treatment with this drug, the patient must provide all the information about their health history to their doctor.

Avoid if you have:

  • History of hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, cephalosporins, or penicillins .

Warnings:

  • Pharmaceutical products such as ceftrex® must be administered with a prescription or prescription.
  • It should be noted that in cases of combined liver and kidney disease, the dose should be adjusted.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions during treatment with ceftrex®.
