What is ceftazidime?

Ceftazidime is a chemical compound classified for medicine as an active principle , which belongs to the line of broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic drugs, with an effect on infections caused by various bacteria in the body. (1)

What is ceftazidime used for?

  • Due to the mechanism of action of ceftazidime, it is used as a bactericidal antibiotic and acts by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the cell wall, eliminating the bacteria that cause infections and their associated symptoms.  
  • It is used to treat: 
    • Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia (two)
    • Lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis.
    • Urinary tract infections .
    • Infections of the skin and soft tissues.
    • Peritonitis and other abdominal infections, sepsis, meningitis.
    • Ear and eye infections.
    • Liver and bile duct infection.
    • Serious hospital-acquired infections.

Dosage and routes of administration of ceftazidime

The presentation of ceftazidime is in a vial with 500 mg and 1 g, containing ceftazidime pentahydrate equivalent to 500 mg, 1 g with solvent in liquid form. The administration of this medication is by deep intramuscular or slow intravenous route and the dosage for information may be as follows:

  • Infants and children from birth to 12 years of age: Intravenous infusion of 30 to 50 mg/kg of body weight is applied every 8 hours. 
  • Adults: The usual dose is an injection of 1 to 2 grams every 8 to 12 hours, intravenously or intramuscularly.

Izadima®

  • Zasolina® is an antifungal medication, which uses ceftazidime as the active ingredient.
  • It is indicated in the treatment of infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract and urinary tract.

Fortum®

  • Fortum® is the trademark of a third-generation antibiotic medication, which contains ceftazidime as the active ingredient.
  • It is indicated for the treatment of infections of the skin and soft tissues, among other pathologies.

Cefirax®

  • Cefirax® is a synthetically manufactured medicine that works as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which uses ceftazidime as the active ingredient.
  • It is used in the treatment of severe infections in the body.

Ceftazidime Side Effects

Clinical studies indicate that treatment with ceftazidime has caused some of the following adverse reactions in a certain patient population: 

  • Possible occurrence of allergic reactions due to patient contact with any chemical component of the formula.
  • Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis at the application site.
  • Nausea, vomiting , diarrhea , dyspepsia, rarely colitis .
  • Leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and lymphocytosis.
  • Headaches , dizziness and paresthesias.
  • Elevation of liver enzymes TGO and TGP.

Important: Discontinue use of this drug and consult your doctor if any of these symptoms or any other not described appear during treatment with this drug.

Contraindications and warnings of ceftazidime

The use of ceftazidime is contraindicated in any of the following cases: 

  • Patient hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
  • During the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • In the breastfeeding period .
