What is benzydamine?

Benzydamine is a nonsteroidal anti -inflammatory drug (that is, it belongs to the same family of NSAIDs as ibuprofen and diclofenac), used to treat discomfort in the throat and oral cavity through mouthwash or gargling.

What is benzydamine used for?

  • Benzydamine has a mechanism of action similar to other NSAIDs, that is, it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, thus reducing inflammation and pain . In addition, it has an antiseptic effect by inhibiting bacterial growth (1) .
  • It is used to treat:
    • Pharyngitis.
    • Radiation mucositis.
    • Post-traumatic edema and vaginal inflammation.

Dosage and routes of administration of benzydamine

Benzydamine is available in 15% mouthwash solutions and as a 0.255 mg or 0.51 mg mouth spray solution. The route of administration is oral and the dosage to be taken is as follows:

  • Mouthwash solution: Take approximately 22.5 mg undiluted or diluted in 15 ml of water. Rinse the oral cavity or gargle for 30 seconds 3 times a day.
  • Mouth spray solution: Take three to six sprays of 0.255 a day for four to six days. Alternatively spray 0.51 mg one to three times a day.

Only green®

  • Tantum verde® is the trade name for benzydamine hydrochloride , an NSAID used as first line for the relief of symptoms associated with pharyngeal or oral conditions .

  • The drug is marketed in 0.255 mg and 0.51 mg spray presentations, as well as a 1.5 mg/ml mouthwash solution, with oral administration route.

Gingisona B®

  • Gingisona B® is a product that contains benzydamine hydrochloride at a 30% concentration  as an active ingredient .
  • It is an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic type medicine , manufactured by Teva Peru laboratories . (3)

Flodont®

  • Flodon® is the brand name for benzydamine hydrochloride, which comes in 15% and 30% mouthwash solutions .
  • The drug is a product manufactured and marketed by Laboratorios Klinos CA (4)

side effects of benzydamine

Benzydamine is a drug tolerated by a large part of patients and the frequency of adverse reactions is relatively low, among these we have:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Laryngospasm (involuntary contractions of the laryngeal muscles).
  • Oral hypoesthesia (decreased intensity of sensations in the mouth).

Important: If you notice the appearance of some of the effects mentioned above or others not present in the list, stop using the medicine and consult your doctor.

Contraindications and warnings of benzydamine

Not all patients are suitable to use benzydamine, there is a certain group of patients in whom precautions must be taken . Therefore, this drug is not recommended in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the formula’s components.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding .

To highlight: Before starting treatment with benzydamine, it is recommended to provide all the information to your treating doctor regarding your health history, in order to avoid possible risks.

Avoid it if you have:

  • History of bronchial asthma, since there is a high risk of bronchospasm.

Warnings:

  • If you have experienced hypersensitivity reactions with any other NSAIDs (diclofenac, ketorolac , etc.), precautions should be taken when using benzydamine.
  • It is advisable to consult with a doctor before using this medicine.
  • Keep this drug out of the reach of children.
  • Store this medication in a cool, dry place.
